Kagan, Donald (NPC) - lieutenant of Magos. Involved in auctioning the use of the black box on Vorn at the Temple of Friendship. Was present when the group discovered the secret passage and presumably followed them in. It is unclear whether or not Kagan had known about the passage before they accidentally showed it to him. It seems unlikely that Kagan would have known Ancient Orcish himself; the impression of players is that Kagan has been occupied with the financial oversight of NetCo, and Magos has been the one vamping around with swords and rings and things like a PC adventurer. Magos seems more like someone who would learn ancient Orcish However, he and Kagan have almost certainly been in communication through some means.

King, The -

According to the crowned orc in the Friendship Temple, The King was last wielded by Diomachus Maximus, who exists to the Northeast, beyond the mountains, waiting. He knows where The King is.

Werner speaks: Friends we are in the midst of events that will change to course of all that is to come. We must tread carefully on the treacherous road ahead, for our failure could mean the end of life as we know it. Our immediate objective is to locate and secure the sword known as "The Captain". We have only one clue in this quest, that an orcish lich "somewhere beyond the mountains to the north-east" was the last to see it. Unless any of you have proposals for another means of locating the sword, we will procede to the mountains directly. Within the mountains we will contact the Grey Dwarves at Arnsata. We will ask them for whatever information they might have of the terrain beyond their mountains. Perhaps they can supply us with maps. Perhaps they know of another ziggurat. Perhaps they will give still more cool magic stuff. At last word, the grey dwarves were beseiged by the Echyebrech, but a special force was sent from the Temple some time ago to see what could be done. We will almost certainly be traveling through occupied territory, prepare yourselves for the worst. We will procede from the dwarvish fortress based on what we learn there. Hubert Stone responds to the above: "If you'll pardon me, Wizard General Gunthor, it seems to me that we are really looking for a needle in haystack. "Northeast of the mountains," is too vague for even a Pegasus-equipped search team to use to any advantage in locating a single orcish lich. Are there any other sources of information--closer sources, possibly in your world--that we could examine first?"

Koboldan Kingdom - Their empire, according to a previous encyclopaedia, stretched across Gailinea and Vyrica, and even across the pass into the present-day Republic. What is there to know about them and why don't we know it? Did they reach anything like the achievements of the ancient Orcs? Are there Koboldan temples lying about waiting for discovery?

More on Magic

When I actually think about it, rather than just writing down something that sounds good, the potential energy, assuming something similar to an excited state of an atom with E=0 at t=infinity, is equal to x(1-1/(t^2)), or for something in quantum state t=2w, 3x/4. Second, the biggest problem with this theory, which I forgot to include in yesterday's post, is that it doesn't distinguish between components. Different gestures, incantations, etc. can (sort of) be explained away by saying that the person is doing different things with the energy, and that the process of casting a spell involves complex redirection of this energy which memorization of a set of actions/words automates somewhat, reducing the amount of concentration that would be needed if one were actually attending every detail of the spell. Still, this means (theoretically) that one need only grab a component, and, were one adept enough, shape that energy into whatever one wanted, whether or not one "knew" the spell or not. Similarly, all components should be universal sources of energy: you should be able to just grab a chunk of anything and go. This is evidently not the case. Thoughts?

Magic mushrooms - magic detection devices. Usual types of magic mushrooms are: general magic, sorcery and necromancy. The readings are on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100, where a reading of n+10 represents 10 times more ambient radiation than a reading of n.

(80 is kind of a danger threshhold for human life; beyond 80 mutations and other adverse radiation effects will manifest with prolonged exposure.) The Cave Portal in the Sprinal Tap had an interesting affect on the magic mushrooms that SOAK sent through - the necromantic mushroom disappeared, while the others were "canceled."

Mailog - Wizard General discussed by Werner in debating the importance of having Guanerius present for Council votes to cancel out Magos.

Killed on Persand Expeditionary Force in combat with red-cloaked egyebrech near portal area in Persand, Nov 10039. Missions: Sprinal Tap (1LT and acting commander), Illum Gamma (1LT), Persand.

Micklegarth - city on Pavimentum where it is illegal to possess magic without a licence.

Middle Earth

Ben ponders: "I feel confident at this point that Rob has incorporated Middle Earth into his mythos rather literally. Many of the things we have encountered match Tolkien too closely for Rob's style of borrowing references. (Rings, Belryg, Ringwraiths, "The King of Rohan", the watching birds, etc...) So, let's assume for a minute that ME is a "real" place to which the characters could travel. Now, have we been there yet? How would we know? I can't think of any geographical features in the worlds we've seen that match ME. Also, ME is Tolkien's mythological history of Earth. Real Earth. If I understand correctly, the end of "Return of the King" brought ME into the fourth age (or fifth, whatever), the age of man, and thus, somehow into the real world of Earth. At what point in time would we be intersecting Earth/Middle-Earth? How would we be able to tell? Evidence that we might be able to use would be:

-The existence of the One Ring. I only recall one of "the rings" that we have seen overwhelming characters into desiring its posession. That was... in the dragon's lair. We took it, and lost it very soon after that in a magic shop... But even this seems not to match the "One Ring" very accurately. Has the One been destroyed yet by [Frodo]?

-Evidence of Tolkien-style Elves. Tall and strong, graceful, immortal, intelligent and wise beyond human capacity. After the War of the Ring they all left ME to a place across the sea and stopped aiding in the affairs of men. Can anyone remember encountering a people who match this description?

-Evidence of "Modern" Earthly technology or people. There was this thing a long time ago involving robots or something in an underground thingy, but that was some bizarre concoction of Rob's which we entered via my world. Does anyone remember this? Have we seen other evidence of old technology? Mithril, for example, is always found in pieces of smooth curves, as if they were the fragments of a very large well-manufactured sphere or egg-shaped thing.

Milius (NPC) - Vornish elf. In the desert west of the Niello Monastery, the Sword Group found a decimated camp where Milius and three other elves were hiding. They had been set upon by skeletal warriors that had killed many of their friends. Joined the Sword Group and gave the speech to the Alliance Council in October 3207.

Mithril - is always found in pieces of smooth curves, as if they were the fragments of a very large well-manufactured sphere or egg-shaped thing, or a shattered solidified bubble/sphere.

Momenchance, Bob (Swill) - Bob writes: "I had a truly bizarre dream last night. I dreamt that most of a farm was dependent upon a large supermarket (which was located on the farm) and that some kind of weird portal opened up in the middle of the supermarket and a HUGE gelatineous (sp) cube rolled out. When I say "huge" I mean it was about 30 feet on each side... "

Mondrian, Piet (Ben) Human male. Furniture-maker, hunter, and archer. Died in 3202 in the combat under the logger's camp in Vorn.

Ben ponders: "I think we can safely say that items 1-4 are distinctly different worlds, whether that means different planets, or different sections carved out of the EOW glacier. Items 5-7 could easily be locations within 2-4 with which we are not familiar. Item 8 is a bit of a mystery. I feel confident at this point that Rob has incorporated Middle Earth into his mythos rather literally." [See Middle Earth.]

Ben ponders further: "[Epistle to Be Left in the Earth] has me thinking about our worlds, particularly ones with compatible numbers of moons, and so on. What if something like that were to happen? Or, slinking back towards regular science, could EOW lie in an ice age?

In a certain sense, the fact that the only way we'll ever be able to get from one world to another is through these portals made by another civilisation thousands of years old, limits the relevance of these world-related questions; Whether or not the portals move us through space, time, or through the wild, weird eighth dimension, we still do not and probably never will have any way to build portals of our own, or use our understanding of their real mechanics to improve our ability to navigate or destroy them. Still, I find it interesting."

Niello Monastery - abandoned structure in Ruby Desert of Vorn that is the destination of the Abraxian Shrine Portal. Used by the Sword Group.

Nightwanderer - ship used by Persand Expeditionary Force. Was rigged to blow up in the harbor if homing bird released or if doors disturbed. An explosion was heard from the direction of the harbor after the team went ashore. (all its canons were set to go off with grapeshot right into the docks.)

Noolya, Tri (Lisa's first character) - sudibin female Eck-killer. She joined the O.R. during the Patville/Tree Bark mission. Member of Order of the Ring. Killed in combat with scorpion dude and egyebrech in portal area under Persand, November 10039 with the Persand Expeditionary Force. Missions: Patville, Yarisuto, Persand Portal.

Ombarov, Caspar (Ben) Human male. Sailor, thug, and self-acclaimed pirate. Ugly. Vornish. Captured by enemy with Randim, late 3202..

Orcs, Dark - While the Tim and Werner Group was training in Salami, Werner received a message from Alotar informing them that the Dark Orcs had sent personnel to instruct the Fire Dwarves in necromancy for the purposes of the war. See the Fire Dwarven Necromantic Research Facility.

Order of the Ring.

Persand Portal Mission with Pike Group(?)/OMNICO(?) - Nov 10039 - a party of about 20 went to destroy a portal believed to be supplying the Eckyebrech base on Persand with ships, supplies and personnel. The portal was unreachable and losses were heavy. Katie vanished fighting Mowcrot.

Orcs, Ancient - See ... Temple of Friendship, Desiderata.

Othniel -- Universalist missionary working with the hill people (trolls) in the Sprinal Tap. He his both preaching his religion and aiding in driving back the gnomish military prescence. SOAK brought him supplies in February of 10043. Dirk Zand worked closely with him during his time in the mountains. Othniel is strong in his faith and obsessive about his cause.
